Cyclone : Trichy under the floods

Here are the news from Govindaraju received today :

" The Nisha cyclone displaced several thousands of people in Tamilnadu.Trichy is one of worst hit Districts in Tamilnadu due the floods of Nisha cyclone. In Tiruchi district, the bunds of the Uyyakondan River had breached inundating paddy fields and the Kuvalai drain was overflowing.
I visited several target villages yesterday and I hereby report that Crops in large areas have been submerged. Several villages have been inundated and houses damaged," Paddy fields in many parts of the district remained submerged under water. The Agriculture Department estimates crop damage to about 25,000 hectares, including over 18,000 hectares of paddy. Maize and cotton crops in about 2,500 hectares were also feared to have been damaged,.
Luckily Amour rice cultivation is partially affected, but the neighbourhood Gunaseelam where we have several SHGs and Progressive housing, has been affected. Agriculture in Gunaseelam has been affected. Allur centre has been flooded. The flood water did not enter into the homes of Progressive housing, but other homes had been affected. People are making representation about the roof leaking of thatches in the third year of progressive homes; some families used blue plastic sheets to plug the leakages; the villages are affected by flood water.

Inspite of several representations of flood victims, SEVAI kept quiet not undertaking any relief work except the Community Kitchen in Amour, and first aid within SEVAI’S own small resources. The worst affected area is Nagapatinam and Karaikal.The total human life loss reported is 102 persons due to Nisha cyclone/floods in Tamilnadu.

Cyclone in Tamil Nadu

I just received from M Govindaraju this information :

"... the cyclone depression and cyclonic wind coupled with heavy rains affect the entire coastal districts especially tsunami region.The houses constructed by SEVAI for tsunami victims are safe.The neighbourhoods dalit homes are surrounded by floods.There is a cyclonic effect in Tamilnadu and I herein attach a few press clippings of the Poompuhar coast heavy rains with wind, and also Trichy region,which is under floods,houses damaged.

SEVAI team sets it up a Community kitchen in Thirnagari Dispensary area in the coast and Allur in Trichy and feed around the flood victims especially old, and pregnant women and children and undertake basic firstaid for them.We could not do anything more than this for want of funds.

The Trichy area is also facing severe rainfall and the low-lying areas are affected by floods,we had also started a community kitchen in Allur for elderly people those who live in and around Allur low-lying areas.The roads leading to Trichy from neighbouring towns were cut-off.The Amour and other SEVAI centres are safe till this morning without flood damage,but all schools have been closed for the fifth day.This is for your kind information.

Vademecum du nouveau volontaire

... vous souhaitez rejoindre SEVAI pour 1 , 2, .... x mois? alors voici quelques conseils des "anciens":

• Si vous n'avez jamais voyagé hors d'Europe, ce n'est peut être pas la toute première expérience à tenter ... ou alors pas trop longtemps! Autant vous le dire clairement, le choc culturel est fort.
• Si vous le pouvez, essayez de partir à deux, c'est plus facile pour travailler et réfléchir sur ce que vous vivrez car la communication avec les équipes n'est pas toujours facile: ils sont tous extrèmement gentils mais leur anglais est approximatif et parlé par peu de personnes à SEVAI.
• Apportez votre ordi: vous acheterez sur place l'abonnement mensuel de connexion à Internet "Reliance" pour environ 15 euros / SEVAI vous fournira la carte.
• Apporter votre tel portable: on vous le "débloquera" sur place, et vous acheterez des unités, c'est moins cher qu'en France .
• Apportez quelques livres en français, vous pourrez les laisser et contribuer à étoffer la bibliothèque des volontaires ...

La santé :

• traitement antipallu : ce n'est pas obligatoire mais si vous decidez de le faire, prenez de la malarone, moins d'effets secondaires.
• si problème de santé sérieux, vous irez à l'hopital de Trichy: très bien, avec un médecin qui parle bien anglais (Dr Velmorgan). Evitez l'hopital local d'Allur.
• si vous restez plus d'un mois, pensez à apporter des compléments alimentaires ( calcium...)
• vérifiez votre assurance rapatriement

Les transports autour de SEVAI:

• les bus fonctionnent bien et pour très bon marché
• si vous souhaitez louer un deux roues, il vous faut le permis international, mais evitez absolument de conduire en ville ! c'est tout simplement kamikaze.

Le premier brunch des amis de SEVAI

... nous nous sommes retrouvés à 7 dans le studio de Pauline, entassés et assis par terre pour manger des croissants en évoquant SEVAI avec nostalgie.
On a bien ri aux récits pittoresques des uns et des autres: les réunions avec "le directeur", les préparatifs de fêtes, les conditions de vie conviviales mais spartiates à Allur, les facéties de Panir à Amoor, les balades dans les villages en moto avec Devindran (le roi du vermicompost!!!), l'ambiance studieuse à Shanti school, risquer sa vie sur les routes indiennes, expérimenter les hopitaux de campagne (...an injection, sir!)... même les 42° à l'ombre nous ont paru agréables alors qu'une triste neige mouillée tombait sur Paris.

Nous avons échangé nos idées et nos projets, refait la stratégie de la microfinance mondiale et fait des plans pour nous retrouver ici ou làbas un jour.

J'ai bien noté toutes les remarques et conseils des anciens pour les futurs volontaires, que vous retrouverez dans le chapitre "vademecum".

C'était un bon moment de rencontre, merci à SEVAI de nous en avoir fourni le prétexte!

Save C02 emission with economic stoves!

Sebastien started this project last year, following the research on the solar cooker which are still to be finalized.
This economic stove saves wood and produces less smoke than a chulla or 3 stones, the traditional cook stove.
The chulla efficiency is around 8% and this stove should be more than 20%.

Due to this difference, we can economise wood, around 70%, that means less CO2 emissions and less smoke for the cookers.

Moreover, this stove answers to the cookers expects: 2 opening fires for indian cooks and a production of less smoke.
The project is to implement this stove in rural family who are below the poverty line, in the Musiri Block in first.
The project , the stove will be financed by the carbon credit (90%) and the family (10%). the average cost is 800 Rs.

Actually, the CO2 reductions can be buy by one foreign brand as suggesting in the Kyoto Protocol.
SHG will take in charge the production and the distribution of the stove.

By this way, we will give technical skills to population in marketing, project monitoring and environmental awareness.

This is a prototype .

In order to be mobile, we need to reduce his weight. We will imagine a new box. But the first measurements show us a good opportunity. We have efficiency around 25 %. That means we can reduce CO2 emissions to 1.5 tCO2per year and per household.

It is still in process.

Goals of the blog

Greetings to all!! Past, present and future friends of Sevai!!!

The idea of starting this blog came to me during a conversation with Jonathan, who volunteered at Sevai for three months, working for a microfinance project and an early childhood education project. He told me about the Indian team there, but also about the other volunteers who traveled to Tamil Nadu to help with Sevai projects.

Amongst others, Marie-Anne and Marion worked with him on the microfinance project, four young students of Supelec helped rebuilding the Sevai website or working with Indian workers in the fields, and the young people from ICHEC in Brussels, as they do every year, financed and worked on a large housing project.

Yesterday, while I was talking to Govindaraju via Skype, Clemence, a young film director, was with him; she will be projecting popular films in the villages near Trichy, including in each one of them several commercials promoting HIV-AIDS prevention… When I was at Sevai in February, Sebastien, a young engineer, was working on a solar oven project launched by a Sevai team two years ago. Every one of these encounters are important to me, to the volunteers and to the people of Sevai, as, beyond the humanitarian projects, they were encounters of friendship and of exchange.

I started wondering where these people were and what they had become, and I thought that they too might be curious… Thus this blog could be a place where we could all exchange news about our lives after Sevai, about the projects we worked on and what they have become, who is working on them now… It is a way of keeping this chain of solidarity that was created around Sevai together.

For the last eight years I have known Sevai, thanks to my friend Benjamine who has been working with them for the last 20 years, I have been thoroughly impressed by the number, the diversity and the great quality of the volunteers that have met with Sevai’s path at a precise moment of their lives. I realized that every year for the last 20 years, there are more than 20 people who go to Sevai for a few days, a few weeks, a few months, or even years… Not forgetting all those who did not have the chance to travel there, but who help us morally and through financial help!

This is the extraordinary wealth I would like to bring together as a, organized network with this blog: beyond the articles that will be written to inform you about projects or fields of work and research (construction, solar oven, agriculture, microfinance, health, education…), my idea is to put together a directory of Sevai friends, and a vade-mecum for the new volunteers (including information about accommodation, food, transports, health issues when living and working at Sevai).

I hope that you too will have the time to add your touch to this blog. Please contact me to get the code.

I will ask M. Govindaraju to give us direct news, as well as to inform us of his doubts, questions and problems.

An innovative initiative for English Education in Shanti School

Language Stars Education Program

Project Presentation
The Sevai – Language Stars Education Project is born from the collaboration between the Indian NGO SEVAI and the Chicago-based language school Language Stars, to provide innovative education methods to children in need in the Tamil Nadu region.

Project Actors
SEVAI (Society for Education, Village Action and Improvement) is an Indian NGO based in Tiruchirapalli that promotes sustainable economic and social development to 250,000 people in 300 villages of the Tamil Nadu region, targeting the most underprivileged rural populations of Southeast India. Since its creation in 1975, SEVAI has made of providing quality education to children of families living under the poverty line a priority.
Language Stars has been providing foreign language education to children in the Chicago area for ten years now through its innovative FunImmersion® method.
The aim of this method is to make the most of children’s unique abilities to
absorb a foreign language naturally. The Language Stars team of educators,
linguists, and early childhood experts has developed a curriculum of engaging games, songs, arts and crafts and many other activities, each of which, in a 100% full immersion context, work towards precise linguistic goals. Offering programs in 8 different centers and over 70 public and private schools, Language Stars currently reaches over 4,500 children aged between 1 and 10 in the Chicago area. http://www.languagestars.com/

Genesis of the Project

In India, mastering the English language is an important, if not necessary, skill: various languages are spoken throughout India and more and more employers demand at least bilingual aptitudes from their applicants. With this observation in mind, SEVAI inaugurated, in 1984, its own English elementary and secondary school, the Sevai Shanti Matriculation School (SSMS).
With the aim of providing innovative and efficient education methods to the children of the SSMS, Language Stars has agreed on a partnership with SEVAI to share its pedagogical know-how. Our belief is that Language Stars’ FunImmersion® method will enable SEVAI children to acquire a natural knowledge of English, thus acquiring solid language foundations they will be able to build upon in their future studies and career.

Project Sustainability and Practical Details
At the SSMS, FunImmersion® English classes will be given essentially to the younger children, aged from 3 to 5, as it is at that particular age that children naturally absorb languages without even realizing it. It is essential to us that this education be continuous over the years.
To insure the sustainability of the project, ex-Language Stars teacher Jonathan Camuzeaux, while volunteering at SEVAI, has trained a local teacher to the FunImmersion® method, as well as organized, with the SSMS head staff, the weekly schedule and composition of the classes. Every year, 240 kindergarten children will benefit from this program, divided in 16 classes of 15 children.
Language Stars committed to provide the SSMS with the curriculums needed for the classes.
An Educational Material Provisional Fund will be created in order for lack of material not to be a brake on the children’s learning. This Provisional Fund will cover the expenses of the pedagogical material needed for FunImmersion® classes, including toys, books, crayons, photocopies, lamination, arts & crafts tools, etc.
For our teacher to be in constant contact with Language Stars in Chicago, and thus be provided continuous pedagogical support, an Internet connection will be installed at the SMSS. A second training should be provided to our SSMS teacher a few months after the beginning of the program, to review the basics of FunImmersion® while working on new pedagogical aspects. For that purpose, Jonathan Camuzeaux will come back to Sevai in January 2009.

Assessment and Follow-Up Tools
The Language Stars Progress Update Card (PUC) will be our main tool when it comes to assess the project’s efficiency. The PUC is an individual progress evaluation sheet that enables the teacher to regularly assess the evolution of each child’s linguistic abilities.
The Progress Update Card is divided into the ten following Learning Phases that reflect the child’s progress towards proficient aptitudes:
1. Listening Stage
2. Repeating Simple Words
3. Repeating Full Sentences and Questions
4. Using Single Words Spontaneously
5. Using Key Phrases Spontaneously
6. Creating New Sentences
7. Asking Questions
8. Creating Complex Sentences
9. Expressing Past and Future Events
10. Conversing Proficiently

The local teacher in charge of the program will complete PUCs once every
trimester, which will enable project managers to have an overview of the
children’s progress and thus of the efficiency of the project.

Volontaires pour VRC?

... nos 3 volontaires Jonathan , Marie anne et Marion qui étaient sur place pour le lancement de VRC sont rentrés en France depuis un mois, après un travail intense auprès de l'équipe pour réfléchir au concept et aider à la mise en place des outils de gestion. Un grand merci à eux!

.. mais il reste beaucoup à faire, et une très belle opportunité pour des volontaires intéressés par une expérience en vrai et en grand du microcrédit : une équipe de 50 personnes qui accompagnent plus de 60 000 personnes réunies en Self Help Groups, près de deux millions d'euros prétés en 2008, plus de 1000 personnes en dessous du seuil de pauvreté ( revenu inférieur à 1$ par jour) en ont bénéficié, une expérience de 20 ans de cette pratique, ... etc

Des exemples d'utilisation des microcrédits

Voici des exemples, parmi la longue liste des activités soutenues par l'équipe VRC :

Avec un prêt sur un an de 40 000 Roupies (moins de 600 €), un groupe (SHG) peut louer un champ de fleurs de jasmin d’un hectare et ramasser 100 Kg par jour pour les vendre à une moyenne de 20 Roupies/kg. La saison dure 6 mois, le revenu brut est d’environ 364,000 roupies, soit 5400 €. Les dépenses sont essentiellement les salaires, les engrais bio et les frais de transport, et la marge nette est de l’ordre de 28%.

Un autre groupe a acheté un groupe électrogène à louer lors de cérémonies ou de fêtes locales ; d’autres louent des champs de bananes, riz, ou paille à natte. D’autres encore ont acheté des chèvres ou des vaches.

La rentabilité est de l’ordre de 20 à 50%, selon les activités et la performance des groupes.

Le microcrédit à SEVAI : la naissance de « Villuthukal Resource Center »

VILLUTHUKAL Resource Centre Project:

Le microcrédit comme levier du développement dans le Tamil Nadu (Inde)

Villuthukal est le nom de l’arbre “banian” en Tamil : c’est un arbre sacré présent dans tous les villages du Sud de l’Inde qui symbolise l'immortalité et la connaissance supérieure. C’est l'arbre de Vishnu.

Créé en 1975, SEVAI a rapidement formé des «Self-Help Groups» (SHG) afin d’aider les plus démunis à développer des moyens de subsistance au sein d’une communauté, en autogestion. Ces groupes d’une vingtaine de personnes bénéficient de formations en artisanat ou en gestion de micro-entreprises, ainsi que des programmes de construction de logements, d’alphabétisation et d’éducation sanitaire.

Aujourd’hui, environ 60 000 personnes (4000 SHG), essentiellement des femmes, ont été formées par les travailleurs sociaux de l’organisation au travers de ces programmes. Les améliorations de leurs conditions de vie ont été considérables (scolarisation, santé, emploi) et, en trois ans, les familles arrivent à dépasser le seuil de pauvreté.

Pour accompagner le développement des activités économiques des SHG, SEVAI facilite l’obtention de prêts sous forme de micro crédits auprès des banques nationales ou privées qui bénéficient des prêts bonifiés du gouvernement.

Début 2008, SEVAI se trouve confronté à deux problèmes majeurs:
• ces prêts ne couvrent que 75 % des besoins des SHG et les plus pauvres n’y ont pas accès (marginalisés et familles en zones rurales isolées).
• les salaires des travailleurs sociaux sont exclusivement couverts par des subventions de l’état indien et les dons des partenaires, ce qui constitue des ressources aléatoires.

A partir de mai 2008, nous avons cherché des solutions avec M Govindaraju et un groupe d’amis de SEVAI (Anne, Nicole, Benjamine, Solène, Jonathan, Marie Anne et Marion) et nous avons d’abord envisagé de créer une vraie banque de micro crédit, c'est-à-dire trouver des fonds et être directement le prêteur. La tâche était ambitieuse, car il s’agissait de réunir 500 000 euros en 3 ans pour constituer les fonds propres de la banque. La suite de l’actualité économique, avec le « credit crunch » actuel, nous montre que nous aurions eu beaucoup de difficultés !

En fait, ces réflexions ont amené Govindaraju à discuter de ce projet avec le gouvernement indien qui lui a proposé un contrat qui rémunère les activités de constitution des groupes, formations et organisations des prêts auprès des banques nationales, avec des taux de 9 à 12%. Ce contrat est déjà en place avec une petite centaine d’ONG en Inde, et seulement 4 au Tamil Nadu. Donc ce contrat a été signé fin juillet 2008.

L’enjeu maintenant est de vérifier si ce contrat permet réellement de couvrir les frais de l’organisation spécifique mise en place autour de cette activité, que nous avons baptisé «Villuthukal Resource Center » pour en faire une entité de gestion homogène. Avec l’aide de Jonathan , Marie Anne et Marion qui ont passé plusieurs mois cet été à SEVAI, nous avons développé une sorte de Business Plan simplifié.

Aujourd’hui, la structure est encore dépendante des dons à hauteur de 25% , mais si nous trouvons des revenus complémentaires ( vente de produits d’assurances associés aux prêts, revenus d’activités agricoles effectuées sur des terrains loués avec les dons…) et que nous affinons bien la gestion, je pense que VRC devrait arriver à l’équilibre dans un ou deux ans.

Ce projet est aussi l'occasion de travailler avec l'équipe Finance de SEVAI ( Chitra, Suda, Kala), et de faire de la formation aux techniques de gestion, utilisation d'Excel, démarche projet formalisée... C'est passionnant!
